CIARD RING - Access to Agricultural Reasearch for Development

The CIARD Routemap to Information Nodes and Gateways (RING) is a global registry of web-based services that give access to any kind of information pertaining to agricultural research for development (ARD). It is the principal tool created through the CIARD initiative to allow information providers to register their services in various categories and so facilitate the discovery of sources of agriculture-related information across the world. The RING aims to provide an infrastructure to improve the accessibility of the outputs of agricultural research and of information relevant to ARD management.

The CIARD RING is a project implemented within the Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development (CIARD) initiative and is led by the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR).

A new journal for Sustainable Development has been started.

The Electronic Journal of Sustainable Development is a biannual, peer-reviewed journal, available online at no charge. This multidisciplinary journal, will address the issue of 'sustainable development' and how it can be achieved. It publishes scholarly articles in the realms of public policy, science, economics and the law as they relate to the concept of sustainable development and its various facets (i.e. human well-being, economic growth, environmental quality, natural resource use and management, innovation, and technological change).
The EJSD is a co-publication of International Policy Network (www.policynetwork.net) and the University of Buckingham (www.buckingham.ac.uk).

Knowledge for Development

FAOLEX - Database of laws and regulations regarding FAO's mandate

FAOLEX is a multilingual team summarizes and in many cases translates laws and regulations on topics falling within FAO's mandate - agriculture, cultivated plants, environment, fisheries, food, forestry, land and soil, livestock, water and wild species and ecosystems. Legal information is received by FAO from Member Nations pursuant to Article XI of the FAO Constitution.

"FAOLEX contains treaties, laws and regulations on food, agriculture and renewable natural resources from all over the world. Most of the material comes from the official gazettes sent by FAO's Member Nations pursuant to Article XI of the FAO Constitution, for the receipt of which FAO is indeed grateful. Upon receiving such material, the FAO Legal Office selects, indexes and summarizes in English, French or Spanish significant texts pertaining to FAO’s mandate, i.e. legislation on agriculture, livestock, environment gen., fisheries, food, forestry, land & soil, cultivated plants, water and wild species & ecosystems. Records are provided in either English, French or Spanish or the language of communication used by the originating country."

Strategizing to support Agriculture - CaRAPN

FAO statistics freely available online

FAO announced that it is granting free and open access to its central data repository, FAOSTAT, the world's largest and most comprehensive statistical database on food, agriculture. Prior to this only limited information was available on FAOSTAT.

"FAOSTAT includes data on agricultural and food production, usage of fertilizers and pesticides, food aid shipments, food balance sheets, forestry and fisheries production, irrigation and water use, land use, population trends, trade in agricultural products, the use of agricultural machinery, and more.

FAOSTAT can be consulted using English, French or Spanish and allows users to select and organize the statistical information into tables and charts according to their needs and to download it in Excel format. The original statistic data is supplied by individual countries and regional development organizations in standardized formats. Records go back to 1961, the dawn of the Green Revolution."

Trinidad and Tobago Network of Rural Women Producers (TTNRWP)

The Trinidad and Tobago Network of Rural Women Producers (TTNRWP) is the Trinidad & Tobago chapter of Caribbean Network of Rural Women Producers (CANROP). TTNRWP has been in existence for the past 11 years. The current membership consists of groups of rural women throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

CANROP was launched in July 1999 with support of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA), rural women of Barbados, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago . The main goals of the Network are to provide rural women with access to credit for micro-business projects, to contribute to government policies that are sensitive to and supportive of the special needs of rural women producers, to contribute to the elimination of the gender bias in the ownership of land, ensuring that women have the same opportunities as men to own property. The Network also seeks to provide marketing support for rural women producers and to offer training, research, technical support and outreach services.

Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC ) is a cooperative of partners within the Caribbean and circum-Caribbean that will provide users with access to Caribbean cultural, historical and research materials held in archives, libraries, and private collections.

dLOC comprises collections that speak to the similarities and differences in histories, cultures, languages and governmental systems. Types of collections include but are not limited to: newspapers, archives of Caribbean leaders and governments, official documents, documentation and numeric data for ecosystems, scientific scholarship, historic and contemporary maps, oral and popular histories, travel accounts, literature and poetry, musical expressions, and artifacts.

CARICOM Statistics

The Statistics Sub-programme compiles statistics on the member countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). These data are submitted to the Secretariat by the member states themselves, either by the National Statistics Office or the Central Bank, depending on the nature of the data. Occasionally, in the absence of data from the member states, third party sources would be utilised.

The data collected are used for multiple purposes-updating of databases, production of statistical reports, providing specified data for analysis.

Overview of agricultural information services in the Caribbean

At the Agricultural Information and Documentation Service of the Americas ( SIDALC) 10 meeting held in Costa Rica in September 2009, Kathryn Duncan, Information and Communication Specialist, IICA-Trinidad made a presentation on Agricultural Information Services in the Caribbean.

The third SIDALC strategic workshop, organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), through the Orton Commemorative Library, technical coordinator of the Agricultural Information and Documentation Service of the Americas (SIDALC), brought together information specialists from the agriculture and environment sector to analyze the current state of the service, share experiences and learn of new trends in the management of information worldwide.

The Directory was compiled and edited by Shamin Renwick (Librarian, Agriculture and Life Sciences Division, Main Library, UWI and Past President of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL), Claudette de Freitas (Information Networks Manager, Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and Liz M. Pagán (Director of Agricultural Experiment Station Library, University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (UPRM) Puerto Rico)

The idea of publishing this arose among its editors and then Director of the US National Agriculture Library, Dr. Peter Young, at a meeting of the Agricultural Libraries Section in the Annual ACURIL Conference held in Puerto Rico in June 2007.

There was no available comprehensive listing bringing together Caribbean agricultural information sources and it was felt that this type of publication would be extremely useful for all stakeholders in agriculture: policy makers, researchers, extension personnel, information professionals, students and agricultural producers, business and consumers. The countries included are the English, French, Spanish and Dutch-speaking countries which comprise the Caribbean subset of ACURIL’s membership which is described as “those countries in the Caribbean basin, mainland countries including the Guianas, and the States of United States of America, which border on the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico.”

Also included are web resources selected based on their relevance to agriculture and their regional nature.

The objective of this Caribbean Librarians for Agriculture (CLA) Blog is to highlight online information resources which support sustainable Agriculture (including Forestry, Fisheries, Rural Development and the Environment) in the Caribbean. Resources to manage online information will also be discussed. This blog is an initiative of the Agricultural Librarians Network of Trinidad and Tobago (ALINTT). It is hoped that policy makers, researchers, students, extension personnel, farmers and persons interested in agriculture will find the resources posted on the site useful. Members at this time are:
